'Your job is only to count. Count, count, count, and count!': Food packing employee reprimanded by manager for pointing out damaged fruit, malicious compliance ensues

Being condescending to your employees is never a good idea. Sure, employees need to try and get in the good graces of their bosses, but the same should be said in reverse. After all, if you're a manager, you don't want the people working for you to be plotting and scheming for your downfall. 

Thankfully, I have been lucky enough to be a part of jobs where anyone with a good idea on how to fix something was encouraged to speak up. However, I have also been in the polar opposite situation, where employees are made to feel small if they are at the bottom of the "food chain," so to speak. This kind of hierarchy is not only pointless but also wildly detrimental to the health and endurance of any company. Why would you shut down the possibility of someone identifying errors just for the sake of flexing your authority? Everyone already knows who's in charge!

  • In this instance, an employee responsible for counting and checking fruit packaging pointed out several instances of damaged fruit to their manager. This might not have been expressly written in their job descriptions, but it seemed like the natural thing a decent employee would do. Unfortunately, their manager seemed to think the opposite.     She didn't like that. She kept telling me that it wasn't my job (which is technically true), but I thought it was important to say something when the damage was a lot.

    One day, all the robots started sending out fruit that was cut into multiple pieces (no idea how). So I went to report it again.
